Wheel Chair Vans
Wheel chair vans combine several conveniences for the handicapped person that can help to reduce the need for purchasing multiple accessories. In a van, we have the inclusive elements of wheel chair lift, wheel chair ramp and wheel chair carrier accessories. Often one or all of these accessories is included in the custom package and any or all of them can be built to specifications for individual needs. This can definitely save you a lot of headaches and a hole in your pocketbook!
First of all, in terms of convenience, the wheel chair van includes the wheel chair lift. A wheelchair lift can come in any number of models and styles depending on the vehicle requirements that you have. In general, a lift will be made up of a metal platform that can be manually or electrically raised from the ground up to the level of the van. The chair is meant to roll onto the platform and then be locked into place before the lift begins to raise the wheelchair up to the level of the van floor. There may also be a skid plate that will be featured on the lift and it can be custom built onto the side door or the rear door of the van.
For the wheel chair van to be fitted with a ramp or a carrier, it will be important to match the accessories with the make and model of the van. Some of the different types of wheel chair ramp include portable ramps, threshold ramps, metal ramps, sidedoor, reardoor ramps and modular ramps. If it is a portable ramp you are interested in, they can often be fold out design and come with a carrying handle that gives them a "suit-case carrying" look. These often come in two or three fold options that are great for compact storage and easy portability. Wheelchair carriers mount to a class 1or 2 trailer hitch that are often included with the vans. These are simple to use as you just pull the release bar that allows the rack to tilt to the ground. Then you can easily roll your wheelchair into place and tilt the carrier back into position, where it locks into place.
With these accessories and others, wheel chair vans are often the best solution to combining wheel chair accessories. Everything can be made to match so that there are not the complicated issues of purchasing items separately. The cost can also be reduced when you choose the economical option of a van. Enjoy your test driving and good luck!
