Wheel Chair Ramps
A wheelchair ramp is a simple machine that utilizes the scientific method of the inclined plane. It is basically a flat surface that is set at an angle and can be used to wheel the person up or down to a different elevation. The inclined plane helps someone to reduce the rather large resistance of gravity with a small amount of energy. The ramp is designed for both wheelchairs and scooters. Some of these ramps have different features depending on individual needs.
Some of the different types of wheel chair ramp include portable ramps, threshold ramps, metal ramps, wooden ramps, van ramps, sidedoor, reardoor ramps and modular ramps. If it is a portable ramp you are interested in, they can often be fold out design and come with a carrying handle that gives them a "suit-case carrying" look. These often come in two or three fold options that are great for compact storage and easy portability. A ramp will commonly be around five or six feet long and will be made of aluminum steel. They can usually support as much as 100 pounds per square foot of area, which is adequate for even the heaviest of people. Now that's one tough ramp!
Ramp systems will often consist of simple components that can be put together quickly with the basic hand tools that you have around your house. Some other features on a wheel chair ramp include the 90 degree turn and "180 degree switchback" which is a feature that allows you to start down the ramp in one direction and exit in the opposite direction. Some ramps will also have a standard handrail, which is made up of two horizontal rails along the side of the ramp. This can be an excellent safety feature for many people who are just getting used to their chair! Before purchasing a wheel chair ramp, make sure that everything is strong and durable so there won't be any accidents. Still, don't get cheated. Make sure that ramp is also affordable to your pocketbook!
If you are especially handy, you might consider building your own ramp out of weather resistant lumber. This is a great idea if the ramp is meant to remain stationary. This can also be a great way to save money and build something you can brag about to the neighbors!
