Wheel Chair Carriers

Wheel chair carriers are designed to carry a wheel chair either as a rear trailer type carrier or as a mountable carrier on the back or the side of the vehicle. Trailer or "tow behind" carriers are often covered to provide protection from the weather. Mountable carriers offer less protection but are also less costly and easier to maintain.

The trailer type carriers have designs for 3 and 4 wheel scooters and also for both manual and power wheelchairs. They usually come with a lockable cover that provides both security and a worry free conveyance over rough roads and dangerous terrain. Typically a trailer style carrier will mount to a class 1or 2 trailer hitch and can even have wiring for tail lights on its rear side. There is also the option for a lift, which can mount onto a Class I Hitch. The weatherproof electronics that accompany these models and the securable cover allow a person to enjoy their powerchair or their scooter anywhere and anytime.

Mountable wheel chair carriers are a simpler and less expensive version of the towing carriers. These carriers are either mounted on the rear or the side of the vehicle. They are usually designed to carry standard folding type wheelchairs. Some features often include an anti sway bar and a release bar, which makes it possible for the rack to tilt to the ground and mount or release the wheelchair. When mounting, you just roll the wheelchair into place and then tilt the mechanism back into the upright position, where it can easily be locked into place for the journey. Almost no leverage is necessary to tilt these wheelchairs into their locking position because of science of the wheel chair carriers. The locking arms and straps are used to hold the chair secure while driving.

Whichever type of wheel chair carrier you prefer, make sure and match the carrier to your vehicle before you purchase it. Some carriers will not mount properly to certain vehicles. Similarly, make sure and match the wheelchair or scooter to the mountable carrier before you take it home. Armed with this information and these general tips, you should be ready to start shopping!
