Spyware protection
Viruses were the only aches for computer users till about five years back. These virus families now have a close ally in the form of spyware. Spyware, installed without your knowledge on the system, sends out important information, naturally without your consent. Spywares have become fastest spreading phenomenon over the last couple of years, and it can be said that more than 90% of the computers connected on internet, are infested with spyware.
It is extremely vital to protect your computer from spyware. There are typically two ways to protect your computer from spyware - prevent them or kill them. Its like your own health - either prevent a disease, or kill the disease itself. Obviously, prevention is better than cure.
It is important to know that spywares usually enter into your computer through the software installed by you on the system. Yet another major source of spywares is the downloads - music, software applications, file transfer, etc. Most of the P2P downloads are almost sure shot way of inviting spyware on your system. Its always better to not to download things from such places. However, if you still want to download from P2P, have some firewall or anti spyware application installed on your system. Remember, an anti virus application doesn't offer any defense against these spywares.
Another major category of spywares acting as a source, is that of freeware. A freeware program developer doesn't have any other source of making money. Naturally, the space available on the program (i.e., the freeware) acts as an information generator. This information is then passed (sold) on to those who are interested in your web surfing behavior. You will then be exposed to pop-up ads containing products or services of your choice. These forced ads are nothing but an outcome of the spying activity having happened in the last couple of days. Try to instill the habit of uninstalling any software that you do not regularly use.
Installing a firewall can be another good measure to prevent spywares from installing themselves on the system. The main purpose of firewall is not to detect spyware or viruses which are already residing in your system but to prevent them from even entering into our system, it acts like a Wall of Fire through which no one can enter or go outside. Firewall simply prevents unauthorized access to your computer or network.
Don't ever open any email from people you don't know. Especially, do not open any attachments until they are scanned for spyware and viruses. Be aware of what's on your system - do regular spyware scans to see exactly what's on your computer. Know your machine! Keep your operating system up to date, scan regularly and make sure you download the newest updates from your Operating System.
