Spyware killer
Identity theft has become a raging topic for the information technology community in particular, and mass computer users in general. Identity theft means your personal information being disclosed without your knowledge and consent. This may include your bank details, credit card information, debit card information, social security number, passwords, user id's, etc. Imagine your bank details have been used by some strange person for reasons known better to him. (Remember that Nigerian trap, where some widow would like to transfer huge amounts of money to your bank, and thereby asking for your bank details. Only later you would come to know that you have been swindled with large amount of money you had in your bank). Still, Nigerian trap has something very clean about it - you at least know that you yourself got into the trap.
Spywares act on the same lines as that of Nigerian trap, except that you don't ever know that your classified information is being parted from you, without your knowledge or consent. Spywares are the modern day threats to computers and their users. That way, viruses are nothing compared to these - virus only hurts your computer. But spyware hurts your financial health as well.
It is all the more imperative to kill the spyware lying on your computer somewhere in memory or hard disk or registry. There are many spyware killers available in the market spread across the worldwide web. Some of these killer applications simply prevent spywares from installing onto your computer, while others detect such pieces of malwares and help you kill the processes.
Typical spyware killer application will first of all scan your system to find any trace of spyware, then allow you to select or deselect the spyware to be removed, and in the final stage, the kill will take place.
Leading spyware killer applications are Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware from Lavasoft. These freeware applications will follow all the three steps viz., scanning, selection and killing. There are other two applications having won recognition in the market place. These are Spyware Guard and Anti-Spyware Blocker. These two applications are different from the former two on one count - these two prevent spyware from installing on your system. Anti Spyware Blocker also helps kill the spyware, while Spyware Guard simply prevents form installation. All the aforementioned applications are freeware i.e., one need not pay any license fees for using these applications. However two of these applications namely Spybot and Spyware Guard are donationware i.e., if you feel that these are good applications, you may donate some money to them to help them pursue betterment of these applications.
