The class had thought out the problem. They knew that loud talking disturbed them as they worked. They made a rule about it. John's punishment was simply carrying out the rule of the class. The teacher might have said, "John, take your seat!" The class would probably have thought, "John has been bothering the teacher." It would have been considered none of their affair. John might have left the table with a grin on his face, indicating that he felt quite smart for having made the teacher cross. Then he would have been a hero in the eyes of the other children.
