He likes to play ball because he enjoys the physical activity. When he succeeds in catching the ball, he does not think of putting anyone out, for his chief interest is in being able to get the ball. The other two enjoy the physical activity also, but they have reached a stage in their development when it is natural for them to organize their play about a definite end. They are not simply playing; they are playing a game. True, their games are not very complex, and in the eyes of older children they would probably seem "silly"; but they are games nevertheless.
