In our study of pupil nature we will take up the successive periods of development in order, devoting a lesson to each. This plan of study should not be understood to imply that each of the eight periods can be sharply distinguished from those which pre-cede and follow. For example, there is no visible line dividing early childhood from middle child-hood; there is no month or day previous to which children are in middle childhood and after which they are in later childhood. The most marked break is that between later childhood and early youth, but so far as the calendar is concerned it is di cult to locate, and since there is a great deal of individÂual variation, psychologists disagree as to whether in general statements the twelfth year should be inÂcluded as a part of childhood or considered as the first year of youth.
Materials of Nurture. One purpose of our study of pupil nature, as we have seen, is to discover the proper materials of nurture for each period of the developing life. To the child gardener all materials of instruction
