Why Home School?

School bullies. Every school has them. They are male and female and in every grade. School bullies can disrupt the educational gains of students. A child may have trouble focusing on their school work when they are more concerned about dealing with a bully at recess. This type of school problem is one reason why many parents choose to home school their children.

Home schooling your children can physically remove them from situations in which a bully exists, but another reason for home schooling is academic freedom. The purpose of education is to provide children with knowledge and understanding that will help them to become a productive member of society.

Have you ever had a teacher that read directly from the textbook? That most likely was quite a boring class. How about a History class in which you only covered the first half of the textbook material because your class fell behind due to disruptive students and other schedule impediments?

Perhaps the teaching method used was ineffective or not appropriate for the current students. The various methods in which education is taught are quite diverse ranging from character building education to schooling that does not involve a typical grading system.

The public school system in each state varies in its educational curriculum, standards, and framework. Therefore, as a parent you might not agree with your state’s curriculum and teaching strategies.

In home schooling you can choose your curriculum based on your academic, social, and religious beliefs. Do you believe in the classic liberal arts curriculum where the student is taught social studies, language arts, math, and science at the surface level to gain a broad educational background? Or do you believe that in depth learning on specific subjects such as higher level mathematics is a better learning avenue for your child?

These questions boil down to the value you place on different learning methods and how they will benefit your child in the long run. Home schooling allows you to teach in the manner you prefer and to extend learning on the subjects you deem important. This freedom has been a cherished commodity by many parents and is a major reason why they home school their children.
