Home schooling program

“Easier Than Programming Your VCR”

Have you ever tried to program your VCR and were stumped? You are not alone. You might have felt the same frustrations when contemplating home schooling your children. Once again, you are not alone. The VCR manual may be incomprehensible, but luckily there are home schooling programs available that are as easy as 1-2-3.

The hardest part is deciding what program to use. There are mountains of home schooling programs available for purchase on the Internet. There are home schooling books and materials available at your book store and library. Some programs use textbooks while other programs rely on DVD’s and computer software.

Where do you begin? Let’s start our trek up the mountain of decision at base camp.

The five key areas you need to clarify include:

1. Age of your child
2. Needs of your child
3. Time you can commit to a program
4. Teaching skill level
5. Cost

AGE: How old is your child? Do they have reading and math skills that are above or below their grade level? You can assess your child’s academic ability through standardized tests or testing at local learning centers.

NEEDS OF YOUR CHILD: How does your child prefer to learn? Are they a visual learner and require pictures to help them understand material? Are they book worms with photographic memories?

Does your child have a learning disability such as dyslexia? Do they have any special needs that must be considered? For example, there are programs available that are geared towards students with reading and math difficulties.

TIME COMMITMENT: What kind of time can you devote to a specific program? Do you want a flexible program or an organized program with ongoing academics assessments?

TEACHING SKILL LEVEL: Do you feel you have effective skills as a teacher? Do you need lesson plans that are detailed or just give basic information? Would you like DVD’s and computer software to act as supplements to your teaching?

COST: What financial resources do you have available? Will a specific program fit into your budget?

Once you have answered these questions you are ready to pack your backpack and find a home schooling program. By knowing your child’s needs you will be better able to determine which home schooling program is the best match.

Forget your VCR and go home schooling program hunting. The book store, library, and Internet are ready and waiting to point you in the direction of the home schooling program that is right for you.
