Nowadays a woman is offered a wide selection of ever-changing styles for every occasion and season. Yet if she buys all her clothes ready-made at a reasonable price, she is at least to some extent still wearing a uniform. Her clothes cannot have that chic and personalized charm which only the specially designed creation can have.
The economy effected by home dressmaking is of course well known to every woman. The money to be saved can be used for other purposes, and is a sufficient reason in itself for learning the art of dress-making. Or the extra money can be used to establish a larger wardrobe.
Even more important is the knowledge that she has created something beautiful and useful. She knows the joy of artistic achievement. Like all the good things of life, dressmaking requires study and application. If it were so simple that one could with no effort sit down to the sewing machine for the first time and turn out a gay afternoon frock, dressmaking would arouse no more pride than washing the dishes.
