the end of the button­hole, forming a bar-tack (Fig. 48). Make buttonhole stitches across the end over the bar-tack, through the material, and then work the other side (Fig. 49). A horizontal buttonhole is worked fan-wise at the end receiving the strain. The other end is barred (Fig. 50). Work one side of the button­hole. When the end is reached take stitches on a slant, making each stitch at a slightly different angle until the end is round (Fig. 51). Work the other side and finish the opposite end with a bar. A tailor's buttonhole is slightly widened at the round end with a stiletto (Fig. 52). To make an eyelet, pierce the material with a stiletto. Make running stitches around the circle and buttonhole the edge, covering the running stitches (Fig. 53). Bound buttonholes are an effective way of trimming a garment. The binding may be of contrasting color and material, or of the same material as the garment. Bound buttonholes may be either finished or unfinished on the back. Steps for the unfinished method are as follows: 1. Mark the length and position of the buttonhole (Fig. 54).
