A continuous placket-used for thin material. Cut a piece of
material twice the length of the opening and twice the width of the
finished placket. Leave seam allowances. Press the edges in and fold
lengthwise through the middle. Lay the edge of the strip along the open
ing on the right side of the skirt. Make a narrow seam with a fine point
at the end of the placket. Turn the free edge under and stitch close to
the first seam (Fig. 40).
FASTENINGS
The "zipper" is the popular fastening, and instructions for its application are usually furnished with the zipper. Fig. 41 shows the right and left zipper foot, with the right one in place on the machine.
See illustrations to show method of sewing hooks and eyes (Fig. 42).
Blind loops (Fig. 43) are sometimes used instead of a metal eye for a hook. Make a loop of the desired length with several threads. Work over the threads with a blanket stitch, which is done by holding the thread down with the thumb of the left hand and inserting the needle, eye foremost, under the bar and over the thread (Fig. 44).
