fullness at the elbow. This is usually done with small darts (Fig. 31) or gathering (Fig. 32). CUFFS A sleeve may be finished in a great variety of ways. A simple treat­ment at the wrist can be used effectively-leave the seam open a few inches, finishing with facing and snap fasteners (Fig. 33). A full sleeve is very attractive when held in at the wrist with smocking (Fig. 34). It may also be finished with a tie cuff (Fig. 35). Turned back cuffs of various widths are likewise attractive. A turned back cuff may be made of double thickness so that no seams show (Fig. 36), or of single thickness bound or finished in a decorative fashion (Fig. 37). The style of sleeve or cuff finishing depends largely on the type of dress and the other trimmings on the dress. COLLARS Collars vary even more in shape and style than cuffs. To insure per­fect fit and style it is always necessary to have a pattern and follow it closely. The neck line and its treatment is probably the most conspicuous part of a dress. The success of a garment often depends on the finesse with which it is handled.
