are made by turning the edges together and plaiting the same distance on both sides. 3. Bias bindings and trimmings. Bias strips are often used for binding, and are a very effective way of finishing a garment. The bias binding may be made of the same material as the garment, or of a con- trasting color and material. Ready-made bias binding may be obtained at the notion counter, and is a great time saver. However, if the binding must match the material or the garment, it must be cut from the same piece and cut on the true bias. A true bias runs diagonally across the material. Spread the material on the table. Make a mark seven, or eight inches from one corner on both the selvedge and the cut end, which must be cut on the crosswise grain. Lay the yardstick across the corner, touching both these marks, and draw a line. Make as many marks as there are bias strips needed and according to the width required. Then cut carefully, following the lines. The strips should then be pressed with the edges turned in and folded lengthwise through the middle (Fig. 7).
