Introduction

HE art of personal adornment is as old as the history of mankind. The instinctive desire for beauty expressed in the earliest tools and pottery shows how natural is the impulse to make a useful object pleasing to the eye. Costumes, even more than the necessary tools of existence, indicate this desire for beauty.
We usually think of history in terms of important battles and soldiers. It is also the custom now to think of history as a succession of economic systems. But nothing indicates the spirit and ideals of a people so much as the kind of clothing
