The first course, of fruit cocktail, oysters on the half shell, or a similar dish, may be in place when the guests enter.
A formal breakfast usually takes place at high noon; never later than half-past twelve. The menu may follow that for a luncheon, or it may be confined to breakfast dishes. A formal luncheon usually is timed for one, half-past one, or two o'clock. The trend today is away from the heavy, many-course meals of a few years ago. Either breakfast, or luncheon may be served at one large table or at small tables holding four guests. The latter plan is convenient if cards are to follow the meal.
