in the center of each. Flower tallies are passed as the guests enter, and each takes her place at once. The flowers are removed when play starts, but reappear, with their containers, as prizes for the highest scores-as many prizes being given as there are tables. Fruit salad with whipped cream mayonnaise, thin sandwiches, and fragrant tea are served at the card tables, the prize flowers again doing duty as centerpieces.
MAY
A May Day Card Party
Informal invitations are written on cards or stationery bearing the pictures of pretty May baskets in water color. On a table in the room where cards are to be played stands a sand-tilled garden (a large pan or shallow box) in which flower buds are growing. The buds are artificial flowers on wire stems. The flower heads are wrapped in opaque tissue by the hostess. Each guest pulls up one flower, and brings it to bloom by unwrapping the tissue windings. There are two of each kind of flower and the holders of each pair play together. Real flowers -apple blossoms or iris-decorate the room.
