Stepping Out In Style: What You Should Know About Baby Shoes
One of the cutest things parents see at the store is a tiny pair of baby shoes. But beware! Without some baby shoe know-how, you may end up purchasing something that is either useless or harmful to your baby. Do you really want to be the crazy parents who blow $50 on designer sneakers for a baby who can’t even walk?
First of all, the baby shoe manufacturers don’t want you to know this, but shoes are pretty unnecessary for babies. Baby shoes that are too tight can prevent babies’ feet from growing correctly. Also, babies learn to walk best when the natural motion of their feet is unrestricted. This means no socks, either!
Baby shoes are okay on special occasions. Just don’t think that your baby has to have lots of different shoes for going out in public. Most of the time, socks are all they will need. When your baby is walking well and beginning to walk places where they need shoes, it is time to think practically. Consider buying baby shoes that have soft, flexible leather soles, rather than stiff rubber soles.
There are several brands of baby shoes that are designed specifically with this in mind. Look for shoes that slip on and are secured with a fabric-covered elastic band at the top. I mean, really. They are not going to be able to tie their own shoes for some time and the main goal is for you to not have to be constantly putting them back on again.
So, to review: Most of the time, baby socks are just fine. When buying baby shoes, make sure they are not restrictive or stiff. Choose natural materials for the best breathability and flexibility.
