Beyond the Pink: Fresh Ideas For The Baby Nursery
The baby nursery evokes images of teddy bears, the smell of baby powder, and the unmistakable sound of Brahms’ Lullaby being plunked out by a wobbly mobile. How do we adapt the traditional ideas of what a baby’s nursery “should be” with the modern style that so many adults enjoy?
Layout
Since you are going to be spending a lot of time in there changing diapers, reading to your baby and playing on the floor, it is important that you design the layout of the baby’s nursery in a functional way. Where will the crib be? This is the first item that should be placed since it is large. Also, you should not put the crib next to a window, so this may further limit your choices here.
Will you have a changing table in your baby’s nursery? If you think you can do without one, imagine getting down on the floor to change your baby at least eight times a day. Now imagine changing your baby in the crib. This prospect does not seem too bad until the one time when you are changing the baby and the baby waits until the diaper is off to have an explosive bowel movement. A changing table is a lot easier to clean up than all of the crib bedding, folks.
Design
Choose colors that are pleasant to look at, colors that do not make you tired every time you walk into baby’s nursery. A gender-neutral color might be the way to go if you plan on having more than one child. Light yellows and sage greens can be made to look either masculine or feminine depending upon the other accessories in the nursery. They also may not have to be repainted if you are trying to sell the house later.
Think long and hard before you decide to put up wallpaper of any sort in your baby’s nursery. Wallpaper is considered by most people to be out of style right now. It only adds to a cluttered look in the room. Themes are best conveyed with wall hangings and other objects in the nursery, not wallpaper.
Finally, design your baby nursery in a fashion which you will like. Remember, a nursery is a child’s room. Retain that sense of simplicity and joy and you will go a long way towards a nursery to be proud of.
