Baby Bedding Basics
There are some basics every parent should know when it comes to buying baby bedding. First of all, baby bedding is a very specialized market. Therefore, it can only be found in a few select retail stores and many places online. This also means that you get charged a lot for something that is not very big. A high quality baby bedding set can set you back at least $150 and that is on the low end.
The Bare Bones
What does your baby absolutely have to have in the crib? Let’s call this bare bones baby bedding: a mattress pad, a fitted sheet, and a light blanket. That’s it. These items are not extremely expensive. Buy three sheets and two mattress pads and you will be set. The baby bedding that you can buy a la carte is not what anyone would call “fun”, though.
The Baby Bedding Boondoggle
So you decide you would rather have cute baby bedding with a theme. This is where the manufacturers get you. Certain items crucial to your overall baby bedding scheme will conveniently only be offered in the 6 or 7 piece set along with items you really don’t need. Example: If you want that cute bumper pad (nice to have in a crib but not crucial) then you have to buy the rest of the set, which includes a diaper stacker and matching hamper.
Do you need those other items? Not really. Will you buy them to get a better deal on the bumper pad and dust ruffle? You bet.
Baby Bedding Bonanza
Let’s talk luxury fabrics. Pretend for a moment that you have an extra $1000 to spend on your baby’s nursery. You decide to blow it all on bedding. Now you can have the most exclusive designers, the ones who design nurseries for celebrity babies, make baby bedding for you. They use luxurious fabrics like chenille and satin.
Then your baby has a diaper blowout and poops on all of it. Yay. Be sensible, people. Buy baby bedding that need not be dry cleaned.
