Finding A Great Baby Shower Gift 101

Quite frankly, babies do not have the awareness or the ability to complain when you buy them weird stuff. But their parents do. So don’t make any baby shower gift gaffes! A great baby shower gift is something the baby’s parents will like, and if you care about that sort of thing, something the other guests will think is neat.

Here are some ideas for unique baby shower gifts.

1. Anything that is personalized or reflects the parents’ individual qualities can be very special. Items in this category include monogrammed blankets, engraved picture frames, or if you are very traditional, the engraved silver cup or rattle.

2. Make your baby shower gift relate to a theme. Buy the diaper pail and stuff it with (clean!) diapers in different brands. Or buy items that all begin with the same letter (bottles, bibs, burp rags, etc.) Don’t be afraid to be creative when coming up with baby shower gifts!

3. Buy the baby’s first copy of a children’s book that is special to you. Examples: The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, or anything by Chris Van Allsburg. What a lovely baby shower gift! If you want to continue, buy the baby a new book each year for his/her birthday.

4. Buy the things that are usually not on a registry but essential: gas drops, nasal aspirator, baby nail clippers, baby wash, baby thermometer, infant acetaminophen drops. This sort of baby shower gift will really be appreciated the first time the baby runs a fever.

When looking for that special baby shower gift, remember that useful things are always welcome, but sometimes it is the less “useful” gift that the parents treasure the most.
